The Crying Cows Rock Engraving site is the most famous of all rock art and petroglyph site in the Tassili n’Ajjer National Park. The engraving are at an isolated site south of Djanet on a stand-alone inselberg pillar rock near Tegharghart. The engraving shows cow faces with seemingly tear drops running from the eyes. They date to around 7,000 BC when this area was fertile for farming and full of pastures. The significance of the “crying cows” images remains a topic of debate among scholars. Some suggest they could represent a ritual or symbolic expression, while others believe they might depict a historical period of drought or hardship.
