Andorra: Andorran Churches
Andorra is famous for its medieval churches, of which there are about a dozen. They are all small, often a single stone building with or without a standalone stone bell tower. We visited several of them throughout the tiny country: San Joan de Caselles Church in Canillo (11th century, in a beautiful valley descending from the French border), Sant Miguel d’Engolasters Church in Engolasters (an absolutely stunning elegant 11th century church with frescos on a high ground above the valley with Andorra la Vella below), Sant Serni de Llorts Church in Llorts (18th century), and also Sant Marti de la Cortinada Church (also 11th century, in a stunning landscape surrounding in the Ordino Valley). And finally one more – Sant Climent de Pal Church – the Romanesque stone structure dates back to early 11th century. Its single bell tower features double-mullioned windows with rounded arches on the top floor—the only example of such windows in Andorra, adding to its architectural distinctiveness. The structure is almost entirely original as it was built centuries ago.
