Antigua: Betty Hope Sugar Plantation
Antigua was a major sugar-producing island during the colonial times. Betty’s Hope Plantation was established in 1650 and operated for nearly three centuries as a sugar plantation. Named after the daughter of its first owner, Christopher Codrington, Betty’s Hope was a key player in Antigua’s sugar industry. Today, the site has ruins of the sugar mills and the plantation house. Slave labor was used on the plantation and the museum describes the history of slavery in the island.
