Antigua: Nelson’s Dockyards National Park
Nelson’s Dockyards is a historic attraction in the south of Antigua and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nelson’s Dockyard dates back to the 18th century when it served as a strategic naval base for the British Royal Navy in the Caribbean. It was established in the 1740s during Britain’s colonial expansion in the region. The dockyard played a crucial role in repairing and resupplying British warships during the Napoleonic Wars and other conflicts of the time. In the late 18th century, Horatio Nelson, who later became a famous British naval officer and hero, served as the captain of the HMS Boreas and was stationed at the dockyard from 1784 to 1787. After the decline of the British Empire in the Caribbean, the dockyard fell into disrepair, but was recently restored and now has a lot of historic buildings, restaurants, and hotels. Particularly impressive are the columns that are remnants of old structures.
