Argentina: Ruta Nacional 40
National Route 40 (RN 40) is the most iconic road in Argentina, stretching from the Bolivian border in the north and going all the way down to southern end of the country, following the Andes. In the northern province of Jujuy, the road is unpaid gravel, known as “ripio” (perhaps from the inevitability of “ripping” your tires). We followed a several hundred kilometer part of the roughest portion across the stunning altiplano terrain – desert, mountains, salt pans, vicuñas, llamas. Absolutely stunning desolation everywhere without a vehicle in sight!
