Armenia: Tatev Monastery
Tatev Monastery is without a doubt the most spectacular in Armenia (not the least because it takes the world’s longest cable car to get to it). The 9th century monastery is fortified like a medieval fortress and sits on the edge of a basalt cliff high above the Vorotan River below. More then a 1000 monks lived in monastery at one time and it was a big center of Armenian culture. The views of the monastery from an overlook a little above is truly epic, the Lord of the Rings-style. I really don’t understand why this is not on a UNESCO list…
