Nagorno-Karabakh: The mountainous landscape

Nagorno-Karabakh is one of the most mountainous countries in the world – it lies almost entirely above the 6000 feet elevation and many mountains go into 9-10000 feet range. In fact, the first word in the country’s name refers to mountains: Nagorno means “mountainous” in Russian. Most of the landscape is deeply forested, and hence the second name: Karabakh is “Black Forest”, a name that dates back to the time when Tatar-Mongols occupied this land. It’s a very drastic and abrupt change after the deserty, yellow, and dry Armenia – an endless forest and rolling mountains as far as the eye can see. The border is marked by a monument symbolizing – surprise! – mountains!
