Austral Islands/Rurutu: Mouth of the Dragon Cave

The ultimate destination of the Lost Track hike in the desolate northern coast of the Rurutu Island is the Mouth of the Dragon Cave. And it’s totally surreal and incredible, probably going into top 10 amazing natural spots in the world for me. The cave is actually located inside a grotto overhanging above the ocean 60 feet below and the stalactites and stalagmites make the dragon’s teeth. It totally looks like the head of a dragon! The cave actually goes deeper into the limestone mountain with cave pools and more rooms with openings toward the sea. It takes an effort getting here, and it equally takes an effort to get out of here – it’s a one way hike along the coast – and the last leg requires open sea traverse underneath cliffs.
