Boliva: La Paz – Cemeterio General
The La Paz historic cemetery is unlike any other in the world (including the famous Buenos Aires and Havana cemeteries). It’s absolutely incredible and insane, dating back to 1826! Everybody is put away in tombs or crypts that resemble multistory apartment complexes rather then graves. Each unit has its address with a row and level number, and people use stairs to climb to replace flowers and put a picture. The entire cemetery takes a 15-block square right in the heart of the city and beneath the moving Teleferico cable cars. Walking around the Cemeterio is akin to being in an apocalyptic universe. Oh, and given how overcrowded La Paz is, you actually only rent your spot at the cemetery for 10 years, after which the body needs to be cremated and space vacated. If you don’t pay monthly fees, the body gets forcefully evicted. I wonder if you can get a mortgage on your crypt…
