Brazil: Rio de Janeiro – Fort Copacabana
The military Fort Copacabana stands at the headland at the end of the eponymous beach in the heart of Rio. The fort was build in 1908 to protect the city and the harbor. You can visit the fort and even explore the underground catacombs. At the very end of the headland stand two tiers of massive cannon guns (190mm and 305mm). The fort became inactive as far as the coastal defense goes in 1987 and is now a museum as well as a couple great outdoor restaurants with panoramic views of the Copacabana Beach.
