Brunei: Ayer Water Village
Kampong Ayer aka the Water Village is the part of Brunei where people live in stilted houses over the Bay of Brunei, roughly ten percent of the population lives here. In the river just in front of the city center is really a collection of shacks on stills. They all look very dilapidated and sultan offered to relocate everyone to land but people just refused and remained water dwellers. It ain’t Venice! But water taxi running all around, police and fire command and schools and shops are all on stilts. It’s the largest water town in the world – meaning completely above water and on stills.
