Bulgaria: Pobity Kamni Stone Forest
This is known as stone forest aka Pobity Kambi in Bulgarian, a desert-like site of sand dunes and scattered stone formations west of Varna. The stones are mostly columns, some as high as 5-7m, many are hollow inside. It’s a lunar landscape, totally out of place in Bulgaria. Several theories exist as to the origin of this phenomenon – from petrified forest to underwater coral sea remnants to natural weathering of the rock – none of them successfully proven. But it’s quite an awesome and enjoyable place, especially after all the churches and crowds of people at the shore.
