Burundi: Gitega
Gitega is now the political capital of Burundi, since 2019. The small town of roughly 110k people used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Burundi until 1966, when it was moved to Bujumbura. Then the president vowed to move it back in 2017, effectuating the decision a couple of years later. The town lies roughly in the middle of the country, at nearly five thousand feet of elevation, surrounded by hills. It’s all agriculture around here, a couple of small museums. Just like in Bujumbura, acute fuel shortage results in long lines of trucks stuck on the sides on the roads without gasoline to continue their journey.
