Cambodia: Banteay Srei

Banteay Srei quite different from the other temples, located 25km further to the north, and dates back to the 10th century and dedicated to Hindu god Shiva. It is known as Pink Temple as it’s built from red sandstone, which is a softer material and thus easier to carve. The temple is rather small, (even the templ buildings themselves look like miniaturized version of other temples), but it has amazing statues and elaborate decorative wall carvings, perhaps some of the best in the entire Siem Reap temple complex. Banteay Srei translates as Citadel of Women. It is also often called “the jewel of Khmer art”.
