Canada/YT: Whitehorse – Miles Canyon
About a dozen km upstream the Yukon River from Whitehorse lies a spectacular Miles Canyon where the river cut into basalt walls up to 50 feet deep. A suspension bridge hangs over the deepest part of the canyon. The canyon used to be deeper and the water much faster and tougher, but a dam built upriver tamed the waters. In fact, the town’s name of Whitehorse was actually after the white water rapids of this canyon resembling a horse’s mane.
