Chatham Islands: Chathams Giant Pigeon

Chatham Islands Pigeon is possibly one of the rarest birds in the world. In 1990s, there were only 40 birds remaining with the species nearing extinction. Yet, conservation and protection brought them from the brink and now there are about 150 birds on the island. I wasn’t really expecting to be able to spot one, but luck was on my side and here we go – a massive and colorful bird sitting deep inside a tree. The birds are 50-60cm/2 feet in length and weight around 1kg/2lb each, like a sizable chicken.
