Chile: Paso Los Caracoles
This high elevation pass on the way over the Andes from Argentina and into Chile is called Paso Internacional Los Libertadores. From the Argentina side the road slowly rises in elevation and comes to customs border check point. Once you clear the customs, you go through a long tunnel and emerge on the western side of the Andes range, the steep side. Here the road goes down in an insane series of switchbacks known as Paso Los Caracoles aka Snails. 29 hairpin turns, one one insane then the other, with surreal views of the entire snail shape from the top – one of the most incredible roads in the world!
