Colombia: Hacienda Napoles

Hacienda Napoles is nowadays a kitschy theme park with with bizarre statues and over-the-tip installation that appeal to neither adults nor kids. But originally, this sprawling estate was the playground of the druglord Pablo Escobar, who had a huge vintage car collection here, a zoo with hippos. elephants, exotic birds imported from Africa, and even a hovercraft on a lake. There were several extravagant colonial houses and many statues. The estate covered 20 sq km. After Pablo Escobar was killed in the police shootout in 1993, the estate was mostly demolished and the wild animals ran away. In 2006, the government created a theme park and zoo here, and since then the hippo population has increased to 40, led by the alpha male hippo named Pablo.
