Colombia: Leticia – Parakeets in Park Santander
Every night the central Park Santander in Leticia turns into one of the most incredible and insane spectacles of nature in the world. Tens if not hundreds of thousands of screaming parakeets come here at sunset to sleep and roost for the night. It’s absolutely unbelievable – the noise and cacophony of the green parakeets, the palm and tree branches covered with them (like monarch butterflies in Mexico) and the sky nearly black with all the birds flying in circles and zigzags. Your ears keep ringing for quite a while after this. The parrots roam all around the Amazon by day but have been coming to the park to sleep for over a decade now, feeling safe and protected in numbers on the town center.
