Costa Rica: Curicancha Cloud Forest Reserve – Hummingbirds

We spotted and photographed quite a few hummingbirds at Curicancha Reserve, especially in the open areas, where they were collecting nectar from purple flowers, hanging and helicoptering in midair. But the real showstopper was the small hummingbird garden with feeders near the entrance to the park. This was a total hummingbird galore – 6 species within literally an arm’s reach, 3-4 at the same time on a feeder, or just sitting and posing in tree branches. Absolutely stunning colors – every possible variation of shining green to blue to velvet to purple. The most beautiful species we saw were: Purple-throated Mountain-gem, Green-crowned Brilliant, and Violet Sabrewing.
