Dem Rep of Congo: Kinshasa – Road Scenes on Kinshasa Outskirts

While central Kinshasa has at least some decent areas with hotels and modern buildings, once you drive out of town, the things rapidly deteriorate. The traffic is horrendous and everybody drives in all lanes including the opposite ones. Traffic jams last for hours in smog and exhaust, with bikers, trucks, cars – all in the total near-breakdown conditions. The roadside scenes are those of endless markets of anything and everything and insane amounts of trash everywhere. Quite brutal and depressing and never-ending. The trash is piled up high and wide everywhere – the sea of plastic bags and bottles fill all the roadsides. The city of 15 million people, Kinshasa produces 10000 tons of plastic waste per day, that’s goes nowhere and is trashed where it’s consumed. Incomprehensible how a country of rush natural resources is plagued by such insane lack of infrastructure, massive corruption, and near-squalid conditions.
