Denmark: Copenhagen – Kastellet & the Mermaid
Kastellet (aka the Citadel) is a star-shaped fortress in Cooenhagen, one of the best preserved in Europe, it’s shaped into a perfect pentagram surrounded by a moat. Inside, there are several military fortifications and buildings, as well as a church. Outside the moat, on the embankment, is the statue of the Little Mermaid, a character from the Hans Christian Andersen tale and a well-known symbol of Copenhagen (if she were alive, she’d be so tired of all these tourists trying to climb her for a photo-op). Further out along the promenade are several more statues, another church, and several monuments.
