Dominican Republic: Santo Domingo – Alcazar de Colon
Alcazar de Colon is a fortress and mansion built in 1510 by Diego Colon, the son of Christopher Columbus and the governor of West Indies at the time. Made of coral rock, the building stands high on the bank of the river and also serves as a fortification around the old city. The museum inside houses priceless pieces of art and decor from the Spanish colonial period when many of the colonizing trips of central America were hatched from this very building.
