East Antarctica: First Iceberg Castle

Leaving the thick ice and sailing into the open waters along the ice age, we came to an absolutely spectacular castle-like iceberg. It was beyond anything I have ever seen, almost like taken directly from Lord of the Ring – the clifftop white castle town of Isengard. The massive iceberg probably began as tabular but sea waves have eroded and melted it into spiky shape with side towers, and arches and windows! Just absolutely surreal views as we circumnavigated the iceberg twice and I went for both eye-level views and equally stunning views from the top of the ship. Icebergs like this are quite dangerous to approach as they can calf or even worse – flip over – creating tsunami-like waves.
