Egypt: Luxor – Valley of the Kings
Valley of the Kings is an area on the west bank of the Nile opposite of the city of Luxor. Here, for over 500 years (16-11th centuries BC), pharaohs, queens, and nobles were buried (west side – into the sunset). The mountains are literally criss crossed with underground chambers and tunnels. Protected from the elements, these tombs and passageways are extremely richly decorated with mythological and ancient Egyptian life scenes. The colors are still brilliantly amazing and sharp, almost like being painted yesterday. The are 64 tombs and new ones are being found almost every year.
