Egypt: Islamic Cairo
Islamic Cairo is a compact area of old city Cairo where many historical mosques and other buildings are located. In fact, they sometimes call Cairo “the city of 10,000 minarets”. The most spectacular are Sultan Hasan Mosque with its tall minarets built by Mamluks in 1356AD, Ibn Tulum Mosque modeled on the Kaaba in Mecca and built in 878AD, and El-Azhar Mosque built in 992AD. All are very different, some lavish and some austere, but all equally impressive and spectacular.
