El Salvador: Chalchuapa
Chalchuapa is another colonial town with a beautiful whitewashed Church of Santiago Apostol de Chalchuapa in the central square. The interior of the church has a lot of wood elements, including the roof panels and a lot of carved figures. As is the fact with many towns in El Salvador, the church is in the edge of the main square, which also features a small marketplace and a park with a few monuments. Chalchuapa town played an important role during the conflicts El Salvador had with Guatemala, it was here in 188 that the president of Guatemala at the time, General Justo Rufino Barrios, was killed in a battle.
