El Salvador: Tazumal Archaeological Site
Tazumal is a small archaeological site in the outskirts of the town of Chalchuapa, in fact there are several ancient ruins around the area – Tazumal, Casa Blanca, Trapiche, Las Victorias. At Tazumal, it’s a single pyramid elevated 23m in height above the surrounding lush rainforest jungle, with several small structures still unexcavated and buried under the surrounding hills. The structures are very old, estimated to date to around 1200 BC.
