England: Grimes Graves

Historically, Grimes Graves is one of the most important sites in the UK – this is a locale of Neolithic flint mines where prehistoric people extract flint (a material used in arrows and tools) sometime around 2600BC and into the Bronze and Iron Ages. There are 433 mine shafts here, all but one unearthed. From the air (last picture, not mine) it looks like lunar surface, but up close – it’s rather disappointing: just a normal field with grass and uneven surface, with sheep here and there. Kind of a letdown…
