Eritrea: Great Mosque of Asmara
The second great historic religious building in Asmara is the Great Mosque of Asmara aka Al Kulafah Al Rashidan aka Grande Moschea di Asmara (everything has a triple or quadruple name here – Amharic, English, Italian, Arabic). The mosque was built by a famous Italian architect Gudo Ferraza under order from Mussolini to impress the Islamic part of the population of the then Italian colony. As such, the mosque blends Islamic elements with Italian rococo and baroque styles.
