Ethiopia: Danakil – Afar Salt Lake

Afar Salt Lake (aka Lake Karum or Lake Assale) lie just south of Dallol with the salt pans slowly being replaced by water and the disappearing at the horizon line. The elevation here is -120 m/-394 ft. Visually stunning with endless white salt and glimmering water, the place is somewhat reminiscent of Bolivia’s Salar Uyuni and is a total photographer’s playground. The lake is quite shallow and you can “walk on water”. Interestingly, we found several giant saltified insects, which if manage to somehow preserve – would make insane souvenirs.
