Ethiopia: Simien Mountains NP – Gelada Baboons in the Evening

The second best time to observe the gelada baboons in the Simien National Park is in the evenings, right before the sunset. This is the time to see massive groups – 100-300 individuals congregating close to the escarpment edge before descending down to sleep in caves and cliffs just below. This is the time when they finish grazing on grass – it is the only grazing primate in the world – and start grooming each other. The males look spectacular with their manes and colorful chests in the setting sun, and little kid geladas run and jump around. This is a total “national geographic” moment!
