France: Beauvais Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint-Pierre in Beauvais was supposed to be the most beautiful, elegant, and tallest cathedral in the world when it was being built in 1230s. Well, those three descriptives don’t always go well together and several elements of the haunting cathedral kept collapsing for being too thin and too tall. The cathedral was never completed but what was built is still the highest vaulted ceilings of any cathedral in Europe up to this day. Inside, there is also an amazing astronomical clock – 12m/35ft tall and 6m/19ft wife – that consists of 90,000 individual parts and has 52 dials.
