France: Sarlat
The medieval town of Satlat is a bit of a tourist trap, crowded to the rim, but not without a reason – it’s spectacular. The old town is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, gothic architecture abound, and every house and mansion is made out of ochre-colored stones. Add several old churches, a massive 16th century cathedral, lovely squares – and it’s a total tourist magnet. It’s also the fois gras capital of France (and likely the world), as most of large and small fois gras producing farms are in the area. The stores are full of goose and duck products – fois gras, pate, confit, sausages, and so on.
