Gabon: Loango NP – Elephants on the Beach

Loango National Park is the only place on Earth where you can see elephants on the beach, sometimes even swimming and frolicking in the open ocean. They often come out to the small salt lagoon behind the coastal sand spit or even onto the wide expanse of the white beach. This large group of elephants including several babies was out at the beach at sunset, drinking salty ocean water, watching the red sun slowly disappear in the Atlantic, and contemplating how good of a life they have here. (In 1996, a photographer even got to photograph hippos in the ocean, and the Loango National Park became instantly famous for the “surfing hippos”. That phenomenon however is much less likely to be observed then seeing elephants).
