Germany: Cruising the Rhine

Cruising the Rhine River is the ultimate tourist thing to do in the southwestern Germany – hordes and hordes of tourists ply the waters on hundreds of boats and liners, big and small. Touristy as it is – it’s still spectacular, as you cruise by the high cliffs and hills dotted with medieval castles, vineyards and picturesque old towns with churches and clock towers. The most beautiful stretch of Rhine is below the town of Boppard, where the fortress concentration is the highest and the banks are high, culminating in the famous Lorelei rock that is nearly vertical. The entire Rhine River Gorge is a UNESCO World Heritage Area.
