Germany: Dortmund – Farmers’ Market
Time it right and you can see the traditional German farmers market in all its fruito-vegetable-flowery glory. The freshest produce of the North Rhine – Westphalia region of the country is on display here – fresh strawberries, new potatoes, greens, local cheeses and meat, flowers – all at seemingly super bargain prices. There is also a good market right in the middle, and you can try anything you want – from German wursts to fresh herring. But the real showstopper is the white asparagus (weißer spargel), a seasonal German delicacy. The season run April to early June and most regions of Germany are bursting with rather phallic-looking vegetable during this time. It is traditionally eaten with young potatoes and butter or Hollandaise sauce.
