Germany: Dortmund

The historic center of Dortmund is rather small and can be easily crossed in half an hour. Dortmund was the heaviest bombed city in WWII, in fact the March 12, 1945 allied attack by 1200 planes destroyed 98% of the structures in the city core (which was the WWII record actually). What you see today has all been rebuilt. There are several churches (the main one being the Sankt Reinoldi-Kirche) and large squares, a beautiful Stadthaus building, and many traditional houses. In contrast to this, there are also many modernist glass and cube-shaped buildings standing side by side with the old.
