Germany: Hamburg – Exploring the Old City
Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany after Berlin and it is considered a separate city-state. It was for many centuries one of the key cities of the Hanseatic League. A major port and harbor, the old city is relatively compact and sandwiched between many canals and artificial lakes. About half a dozen massive churches rise to create a distinct city skyline – Saint Catherine’s, Saint Peter’s, Saint James’, Saint Michael’s and so on. And then of course there is the massive centralsquare of Rathausmarkt (City Hall Marketplace) with the magnificent Rathaus
