Germany: Rapeseed Fields in Saxony-Anhalt & Thuringia

Rapeseed is cultivated widely in western, northern, central, and Eastern Europe, but Germany is the largest producer in EU. Come spring time – the bright yellow fields extend to horizons, often picturesquely blending with wind power turbines. Rapeseed belongs to the mustard family and has been grown since ancient times for oil and animal feed, but these days it’s primarily for biodiesel fuel. Spectacular fields in ultra bright yellow color contrasting against the blue skies (like the Ukrainian flag). But walking into the fields may not be such a great idea – the pollen stays on your clothes and is hard to wash off, not to mention at being seriously allergy-causing.
