Ghana: Cape Coast – Fort William

Fort William sits on the highest point above Cape Coast, affording superb defensive views. Architecturally, it’s quite unique – it’s one round tower rising about 7-8 stories above the ground. Nobody comes to visit it, everybody flocks to Cape Coast castle just down the shore. Too bad, since panoramas from here are absolutely best in Ghana. Also, squatters live in the fort and the entire area around smells like a toilet. Interestingly, 5.4 million Ghanaians still poop without toilet – on the side of the road, beach, or in the woods near the house, and apparently – quite often in the UNESCO-listed World Heritage forts.
