Greece: Ancient Dodona

This site is very little known since its kind of out of the way of tourists, but historically it’s immensely significant. Dodona was actually the location of the first Greek Oracle where words of Zeus were interpreted for the masses (Oracle of Delphi is much better known but it actually came second). Massive Zeus Temple was located here as well as an acropolis and a huge theater. The theater, dating to the 2nd century BC was at the time and still is one of the largest theaters of Ancient Greece. Dodona was known the world over in Hellenic times and pilgrims came here to have the Oracle interpret the rumblings of the oak leaves and the words of gods. These days – there’s nobody here and you will have the whole theater arena all for yourself. Even UNESCO missed this one.
