Greece/Corfu: Paleokastritsa Monastery

Paleokastritsa Monastery is one of the oldest on Corfu, dating back to 1224 and standing on an outcrop of vertical cliffs near the town of Paleokastritsa. The monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was actually destroyed and rebuilt multiple times throughout its history by various invaders and and armies controlling the island – Genoese, Venetians, Ottomans, British. The church building has a lot of religious treasures inside, as does the small Byzantine museum next door, displaying old icons and bibles that are over 500 years old.
