Guatemala: Antigua – Iglesia de La Merced
Iglesia de La Merced is without a doubt the prettiest in Antigua and one of the most important religiously. It dates to 1757, took 15 years to build and occupied more then a city block with the inner fountain and a massive attached convent. It is here that the most famous processions begin during the Holy Week. The facade of the church is spectacular, bright yellow and white, shining brightly in the setting sun. The interior is less lavish, but still impressive. The true gem is just next door – the attached ruined Convent de la Merced, with the massive foundation and absolutely surreal panoramic views from the rooftop – you can see the volcanoes literally puffing and smoking so near to Antigua!
