Hungary: Eger Castle
The Castle of Eger stands proudly above the beautiful town and has fearsome fortifications. It was built in the early 1500s against the Turkish invasion and is famous for having withstood the siege of nearly 40,000 advancing Turks with only 2,000 defenders. The stone walls and ramparts and towers are all super thick and impenetrable and most gun positions sit high with a full panorama around. You can spend half a day exploring the castle grounds and savouring the ultra-panoramic views of the town of Eger with all its baroque churches spiking out.
