Hungary: Eger

The town of Eger in central Hungary is truly awesome and should be among top destinations in central Europe. It has absolutely everything you can imagine for a small medieval town – a spectacular fortress with panoramic views (next post), 17 churches including the humongous Eger Basilica and a beautiful twin-towered Minorita Church (both stunning inside as well), the northernmost minaret in Europe from the Ottoman days, beautiful cobblestone streets and atmospheric squares – all in elaborate baroque architecture. If all this wasn’t enough, there are thermal baths. Want more? Eger is world famous for its wines, especially the reds, one of which is called the Bull’s Blood and has been drunk and prized by many European monarchs.
