Iceland: Icelandic Futuristic Churches
In contrast to simple turf-roofed old churches, Iceland has half a dozen of avant-garde futuristic churches that look like alien ships have landed in this land of fire and ice. The church in Stykkishólmur is one of them, Blonduous is another. Akureyrarkirkja in the second largest Icelandic city of Akureyri looks like two towers of columnar basalt. The church in Egilstadir in the Eastfjords stands as another example of sharp-edges geometry. Another Eastfjords church is in Njardvik. There is also a cathedral in Skalholt and of course the massive Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik that looks like towers of jointed columnar basalt as well. And last but not least – the church in Keflavik.
