India: Ahmedabad – Historic Mosques of Ahmedabad
The medieval walled city of Ahmedabad (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) has three 15th century mosques built at the height of the Gujarat sultanate. The mosques are Jama Masjid (the largest), Sidi Sayeed’s and Ahmed Shah’s. All three are structurally similar and lack minarets (supposedly as a result of a large earthquake). Jama Masjid was built in 1424 and has a large walled courtyard in front, while the mosque itself has intricately carved facade, 260 carved pillars, and 15 lotus flower-carved domes – totally stunning! Ahmed Shah’s mosque is even older, dating to 1414, and also is supported by 152 carved pillars. Finally, Sidi Sayeed’s mosque is the oldest from 1472 and is famous for its latticework carved windows.
