India: Ahmedabad – Shree Swaminarayan Temple
Besides mosques, Ahmedabad is also home to two spectacular temples. One of them, the Hindu Shree Swaminarayan is a 19th century structure that is so colorful you almost go blind. The myriads of carved gods and goddesses, and animals and other features are all painted in super bright yellow and greens and reds. In fact, the many arches of the temple each have a slightly different color combination and tone by design. The temple is surrounded by a wall with a colorful central gates and a women’s temple and dorms for pilgrims are nearby as well. During the Hindu holiday of Divali, over a million people come here in just one day!
