India: Ajanta Caves – Hiking Down to the Cave City

Moving on into the central India and to the most incredible site of Ajanta Caves – 30 or so rock-hewn caverns with sculptures and paintings dating back to 2nd century! Yes – 2nd century! Most visitors come to the main gate and enter the cave complex, but a much more exhilarating and spectacular way is to drive about 20km around to a panoramic overlook high above the caves and then hike down from there. The panorama presents a horseshoe of all the caves along the river bend. The hike is about 1hr through a desert-like environment with succulent plants, dry trees, and rocky landscape.
